Located in the heart of Teddington High Street, One One Four combines a neighbourhood restaurant feel with wonderful contemporary dishes, a fantastic bar & service in a relaxed setting.
Visiting with a friend for a pre-Christmas catch up, I was immediately struck by the effortless crisp & clean contemporary styling of the restaurant married with the warmth of the atmosphere. Husband & wife owners Sam & Alex aim to make the city meet the country in the seasonal menu made from locally sourced ingredients alongside a well stocked bar and wonderful staff.
As well as a love of food, the owners also share another passion of mine; gin! They have even created their own served in the restaurant, The Good Life Gin Co. Named after the famous TV show set in their neighbourhood of Surbiton, the gin has a juniper, pink grapefruit and earl grey tea flavour profile. They distil using a traditional pot still in small batches of 100 bottles. I loved the crispness of the gin, with a hint of spice and a citrus finish. I loved it so much I even purchased a bottle for a friend’s birthday!
I immediately loved was the introductory section of the gin/cocktail menu which featured the ‘Gin-oisseurs’ code of conduct’. These had me in fits of giggles in the restaurant, especially rule number 1 and 6!
I also discovered that you can book a gin masterclass including expert tuition on 5 different gins and 2 gin & tonics or attend their monthly Gin Club! This is held on the last Saturday of each month & includes a welcome G&T and tastings (bookings at least 24 hours in advance necessary!).
We opted for the lunch menu which had 3 choices for starters & mains, sides and two desserts to select from. This should normally make it easier to decide what you want from the menu, but the options were all so fantastic it was still really hard! The lunch menu is also extremely reasonable; priced at £15 for one course, £20 for two and only £25 for three! No wonder it was busy – I would definitely recommend booking a table to avoid any disappointment.
From the lunch menu I couldn’t resist the smoked chicken consommé with confit chicken wing, salsify and tarragon. I am a sucker for a beautiful consommé and this one did not disappoint! In fact I’d say it was on par with one of my all-time favourites from The Wolseley! It was crystal clear with heaps of flavour that paired perfectly with the smoked chicken and steamed vegetables on the dish.
My friend opted for the Gin & tonic cured salmon with a beetroot ketchup which was beautifully presented and from the little taster I had it was deliciously balanced. You can just see it in the background above!
For my main I selected the Gressingam duck breast with kalette, celeriac and yellow chanterelles. The duck was nicely blushing, all the accompaniments went perfectly together with it and the jus was absolutely divine! A truly delicious meal.
Other options on the day were Cornish hake, with octopus an squid ink risotto or a vegetarian dish of pumpkin tortellini with feta that both looked stunning when I saw them serving other tables.
I thoroughly enjoyed lunch at One One Four and have been recommending it to friends since I visited – the chicken consomme has been mentioned many many times! I will definitely be visiting their sister restaurants No 97 or Cento Uno both in Surbiton and heading back to the wonderful One One Four for the new seasonal menu or a gin club/masterclass soon!
